Atlantian Horsemanship Class Descriptions!



Classes are often available at University but also by (advance) request at any event or meeting.

How to MOL for the Cavalry - Instructor: Brandwyn Alston of the Rift. This class covers equestrian authorizations, sign-in proceedures and typical cavalry tournaments and the role MOLs can play in them. It is beneficial for MOLs and Cavalry Marshals. Class is in compliance with KMOL policy. (one hour, handout available). Email BrandwynAlston [at] gmail.com for a copy of the handout.

Cavalry Safety Class - As with all Atlantian marshalate activities, anyone on the field (in the ring) must sign a waiver and be authorized or warrented. Riders must attend this class prior to authorization. Friends and family are encouraged to attend as well. The class covers basic safety for cavalry activites.

Cavalry Marshal Class(s) - At this time marshal in training candidates for the cavalry should take the general marshal class. In addition classes are being offered to increase general horse knowledge. They will focus on information an EMIC needs to know but are open to anyone that wants to learn more about horses and horse care. Individual class descriptions are not yet available.

Introduction to SCA Mounted Games - Picture show of common mounted games played and equipment used within the SCA.

Autocrating an Event with Mounted Games - Covers the requirments for hosting mounted games at and SCA event. Includes site requirements, scheduling considerations, insurance paperwork, and competition ideas. This class is often combined with the Intro to SCA Mounted Games class.

Equus 101 - An introduction to the horse geared toward people with interest in horses but who have little to no experience around or knowledge of horses. A general overview of the characteristics and personality of the horse, care and maintenance, riding styles and equipment, and how these wonderful animals fit into our daily lives today and in the past.

Grooming and Saddling the Rental Horse - This class is intended to provide some instruction for those equestrians who would like to help get the horses ready to ride but don't know a curry comb from a caveson. We will cover grooming tools and how to use them, saddling and bridling with English and western tack, and basic rules of handling horses.

Advancing Beyond Begining Riding - Tips for finding lessons, some pros and cons of owning your own equipment (like saddles and groom boxes), recommended books on horsemanship, and other ways to learn more about horses in general. The target audience is those with EQB (ride at a walk) and EQI (ride at a trot) authorizations who are interested in working toward EQA (ride at a canter) authorization safely and comfortably.

The SCA Horse - Owning a horse is not a requirement for participating in SCA mounted games. Rental horses are frequently available. However, if you are interested in getting a horse or arranging for rental horses in your area, this class has information about the type of horse best used for events in the SCA, their training and equipment.

Flags won't eat you and other fun stuff for horses - A general guide to starting your own horse or a rental through the mounted games.

The Role of the Horse in the Middle Ages - A look at the many and varied contributions the horse made to life in the middle ages, in war and peace, at work and play.

Medieval Horse Tack - A review of the tack that was used with horses in the medieval ages and how it relates to take we use today. Primary focus will be with regard to horses ridden in battle and tournament, but will also touch on other uses. (2 hours)

Survey and Construction of Horse Barding - A brief survey of period sources of the various styles of barding seen in period. Some construction methods of both open (leather strapping) and full (cloth sheet) construction for the use in the SCA, so your horse can look as good as you do on the field. Several plans will be available, including adjustable plans for those who rent horses at events. (2 hours)

Garb for Riders - An overview of clothing worn by riders in paintings and tapestries. Also a discussion and samples of common SCA patterns modified for safe riding.
